125 Jahre Nord-Ostsee-Kanal - Verbindet die Meere, teilt das Land

NDR | Unsere Geschichte | 1  ×  90 min | 11.06.2020

The canal that connects and separates: the eventful history of the Kiel Canal to the present day. The occasion is the 125th anniversary of the opening in 1895. The focus is on the construction phase of the NOK from 1887 - 1895.

The NOK was not only built by Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm, but above all by workers from all over the world, ingenious engineers and bold planners of the Kaiserliche Kanalbau-Komission. The local population had to cope with a lot - but in the end they still profit from canal construction today.

The history of the Kiel Canal is also a reflection of German history - from the German Reich, through the world wars, the Nazis, the economic miracle, the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union to globalisation.

The protagonists tell the stories of their ancestors, their families, who came to the Canal to find work. In fictional play scenes based on authentic reports, we tell the saga of Emma from Hildesheim, the Jegliewski family from Masuria, the worker Kumbartzky and the bricklayer Federico Rinaldi from Venice.

Hubertus Meyer-Burckhardt narrates the journey through time around the Kiel Canal.
