Tasmania—Australia’s green island—is a dream destination for adventure seekers. Here, in an area the size of Ireland, you’ll find a mix of spectacular landscapes: high alpine mountains like those in Switzerland, rolling hills like those in England, and kilometers of deserted sandy beaches. European influences shape life in the capital, Hobart, a vibrant and cosmopolitan city. The Tasmanians’ favorite saying: “No worries”—why worry?

Carleeta Thomas, too, faces her challenges with great optimism. The young woman is a descendant of the Palawa, the Indigenous people who inhabited Tasmania before the arrival of the English conquerors some 200 years ago. She wants to preserve the traditions of her ancestors while also savoring life in the big city—a balancing act. The film follows Carleeta and her niece Kasey on a hike to Wukalina, the Palawa’s sacred mountain, and joins them on a quest to trace their roots.

Brett Brady is one of the last residents of a ghost town in the heart of the Tasmanian rainforest. Fifty years ago, Strathgordon was the urban hub of a massive construction site. Up

to 2,000 people built the 140-meter-high dam—one of the tallest in Australia. Today, large parts of the former town have been reclaimed by the jungle.

But sometimes Brett, who works as a mechanic maintaining the dam, still hears the voices of former residents.

On her farm on Flinders Island, Kate Mooney raises the babies of wombat mothers who have been hit by cars. The little marsupials need to be bottle-fed four times a day—a never-ending task. She has already raised 300 of them, earning herself the honorary title of “Wombat Lady.”
