Wie Sand unseren Alltag erst möglich macht

NDR | Wie geht das? | 1  ×  28 min | 05.06.2019

"As sand by the sea!" - not at all. The earth is running out of sand! The quartz grains are the most consumed raw material in the world next to oil and water. This scarce resource is in great demand as the "megastar of the electro-industrial age", and experts speak of the "new gold". In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, sand has been transported from 15 meter deep deposits in the Baltic Sea for 50 years. For coastal protection and tourism alone, half a million cubic metres are needed every year - the 400-metre-long outer coast lacks supplies. "Wie geht das?" inspects our Baltic Sea sand with researchers, accompanies "gold diggers" on complicated sand fills and explains how the local natural resources are turned into different products for the region in highly complex industrial processes. Binz is also home to one of the most spectacular sand sculpture festivals in the world.
