Die Schäferin
NDR | NaturNah | 1 × 30 min | 17.09.2019
Uta Wree is a mother, veterinarian and passionate shepherdess. 1000 nordic sheep belong to her herd. She herds 500 animals on the mainland around Schleswig, the other half of the herd lives on Sylt from April to October. The view of the sea, a purple-blossoming heath and a mild sea climate: a true idyll, but for the 46-year-old also hard work. From morning to evening and in any weather, she stuffs fences, cares for wounds and helps lambs into the world.
Working on the heathland of Sylt has always been a dream of the shepherdess. When the first island shepherd left in 2014 and the landscape association Sylt and the state of Schleswig-Holstein were looking for a successor, she was immediately on the spot. For three years now, her rare breed of sheep has been contributing to the preservation of the heath and the diversity of species, as the invasive potato rose is one of the animals' favourite foods. But next year could be the end of this trend - the position will have to be advertised again by law. It is still uncertain whether Wree and her animals will be allowed to return next April. The decision will be announced in March.
NaturNah! accompanies Uta Wree and her 1000 sheep alternating between mainland and island. A film about boundless animal love, exhausting work and the difficult balancing act between family and dream job.
