Fehmarn im Bulli-Fieber

NDR | Die Nordreportage | 1  ×  28 min | 09.07.2018

The most beautiful VW vans, a spectacular convoy and an abundance of joie de vivre: VW bus aficionados celebrate their favourite van at the Midsummer Bulli Festival on the island of Fehmarn. Sunshine, seaside and a touch of Woodstock attract more than 50,000 visitors and 1250 busses to the sunny island. The programme “Die Nordreportage” joins families, fans and organisers for one of the largest and craziest VW bus gatherings in the world.

A group of housemates from the district of Harburg, who share a passion for cult VW vans, is visiting the festival for the third time – and they are a real eye-catcher. Headed by the carpenter Jürgen “Goofy” Sehl and nail designer Sandra Schlabbach, the clique of craftsmen toils away for all it is worth to present the fruits of its labours to visitors and turn the festival into an unforgettable experience. The centrepiece of their camp: a wooden table, more than five metres long, at which the 14 Lower Saxons eat and make merry together.

Whether surfers, collectors or students – the passion for the VW bus unites people from all generations on Fehmarn and turns the colourful festival crew into a tight-knit community.
