Rudern, Schippern, Keschern - Triathlon für die Fleetenkieker auf der Alster

NDR | Die Nordreportage | 1  ×  30 min | 29.07.2019

"Schieren auf allen Kanälen" - Die Nordreportage accompanies the "Fleetenkiekers" before, during and after their hardest mission of the year: On the first weekend in July, the world's largest triathlon is taking place in Hamburg and around 10,000 athletes plunge into the Inner Alster. Therefore, it is important for hosts and athletes that the event runs smoothly - and that the Alster is free of rubbish. Armed with a route map and landing net, the volunteer garbage patrol starts at dawn for its most important mission of the season, an intensive race against the clock begins.  48 hours - an exciting hero's journey with a sudorific, hanseatic and ecological challenge.

The aim of the Fleetenkiekers is to give the children a wow-effect and of course a clean Alster - which is especially important on the day of the Hamburg Triathlon. The largest triathlon in the world attracts over 250,000 visitors and 10,000 participants to Hamburg. What's special about this event is that the Alster will be an active part of it these days. The triathletes cover a distance of between 500 and 1500 metres in the Alster. During this time, all eyes will be on the Alster. For athletes, it is essential to swim in a clean Alster - because this is also what the host advertises. Already two days before the start of the triathlon, the volunteers start the big clean-up campaign. On the event days themselves, they start patrolling at 5 a.m. so that the track is free of rubbish on time for the starting signal.
