The model being built in Leipzig is the 5th of the sports car manufacturer Porsche – the “small SUV” Macan. Since the executive board made the decision at the end of 2010, Porsche has invested some 700 million euros into expanding the Leipzig factory. A new production hall has been built, along with an ultramodern paint shop. Some 1500 new employees have been hired, trained and integrated into the production process.
n-tv has been standing by at close quarters over the past 24 months, observing the building of the new assembly halls, for example, the production of the first Macan, the training along the assembly line, the start-up of production and the opening ceremony for the plant on 11 February. 50,000 vehicles of this model are to be built by Porsche starting in 2015. By then, the sports car manufacturer will be turning over more money with the manufacture of SUVs and the saloon Panamera than with its sports cars 911 and Boxster.
